Use the URL officially recommended in these ESP8266 Core installation (Installing with Boards Manager) instructions… it will keep you updated.

I’m still using 2.4.0rc2 and I don’t have any of described problems, so I would recommend to use this version until 2.5.0 release.

The ESP8266 Arduino core guys are being a lot more proactive these days. I would recommend their master branch.

Master branch is not always an option. But the good news here is, that we should get a much better ESP8266 Core platform really soon.
I thought that was one of the purposes of the master branch?
Agreed and we can all skip ESP32’s until another decent chip arrives like the ESP8266.
