I guess for “moon lander” style iOT projects then your library is very useful i.e. when you need access to the dozens of pins on a Mega.

For most projects D1 and D1 Mini’s are probably all that is needed and for a very modest cost.

Mega is good because it has more Serials.

For my main project I need more pins then an esp8266 has, and 2 analogs and a stable PWM. And if the sketch is for Atmega, I can still switch from WiFi to Ethernet.

And do not forget that esp8266 was designed for serial WiFi modules and they used gpio pins of Tensilica for the system and for the system boot setup. So many of the ‘free’ pins require some state at boot.
