Blynk Server Understanding

Hey guys

Excuse my ignorance but i just wanted to ask you guys what the benefits of running a Blynk Server are? Why not just use Blynks hosted servers? Is it because of the cost’s?

Thanks guys

Latency is one plus (if your internet isn’t grand)
Data has higher granularity. (1 minute data point with cloud)
Fun! (Managing your own server)

And widgets are unlimited

And i guess another plus is managing your own API linked to the device

You can’t contact the Blynk cloud servers if the internet is down. If you have a ‘mission critical’ system that requires Blynk to control something then having your own internal server makes you more resilient to these issues.

With your own server you can allocate yourself as much energy as you need, so you don’t have to buy Blynk energy. (But energy isn’t that expensive, so if this is your only motivation then think carefully about the savings versus the time and energy needed to run a server, plus the cost of the hardware).

Personally, I use the Blynk cloud servers and am very happy with the reliability and cost. My Home Automation system is designed to be self-contained and autonomous, so doesn’t rely on Blynk being accessible to ensure that it continues to function if the internet or the Blynk cloud server is down.

Pete.

  • you own your data
  • you can keep the communication inside LAN (and use VPN if needed)

You can also wait for the new blynk platform

Yeah, speaking of that, is there some release date? I got a bit excited as it was annouced few months ago…

We are very close. No specific deadlines. We have few clients in the pipeline that we are launching on the new platform. When it is done - we are ready for public release.
