Hi Pete,
I came up with a similar setup using available hardware and uploaded the code that i have added here in this conversation thread and the system seem to run smoothly when i send parameters randomly to the sensor Pin of the arduino. A picture of the setup is attached to this message. (Feel free to give comments about it). I write this message to state my progress in finding why the ESP_01 froze.
